My research explores early modern textual and visual culture through a comparative lens informed by an interdisciplinary approach. I am particularly interested in questions related to:
  • ecocritical approaches to the pastoral mode and questions related to consumption and nostalgia therein
  • readers and the reception of cultural products
  • intertextual and intercultural influences and discourses
  • the dichotomy between the rural and the urban and the resulting tension between what is considered "artificial" and what is conceived of as "natural"
  • conventions and rules that encode behavior and aesthetics, thereby influencing receptive and productive practices
  • constructions of identity and space
  • digital pedagogy and scholarship
  • the act of reading and the teaching of literature and culture

Research Initiative: Early Modern Humanities Lab (Kansas State University)

PictureScreen capture from Voyant Tools of I.12 of the Astrée. Voyant Tools is a freely accessible text analysis tool designed by Stéfan Sinclair & Geoffrey Rockwell.
As a teacher-scholar and literature professor, I believe that one of the most rewarding activities for students is to engage deeply and critically with texts. I began the Early Modern Humanities Lab in 2018 to work one-on-one with an interested undergraduate researcher on a project that combines digital humanities, pedagogy, and early modern literature and culture.
The first project (fall 2018) was "Mapping the Astrée: Character, Geography, and Myth," with Kiara O'Dea. This was a completely collaborative model wherein we worked equally on the project, including establishing objectives, analyzing data through close reading and digital means, drafting a conference presentation regarding our preliminary findings, and ultimately designing and sharing an openly accessible website. This type of close mentorship and collaboration not only highlights best practices in the field of digital humanities but also facilitates new scholarship and research practices. For further information, please visit the project website, read the peer-reviewed and co-authored article describing the project and its findings (European Studies Conference Selected Proceedings 2018), or feel free to reach out if you're interested in getting involved. Subsequently, I've had the pleasure of overseeing additional projects, including
  • Aaron Middaugh (BA, Modern Languages: French & Spanish, 2021). Project: “Montaigne’s Essais: Reading ‘Des Cannibales’” (Poster Presentation). In Conjunction with “Research for All” Initiative launched by Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry, fall 2019.
  • Matthew Murphy (BA, Modern Languages: French & Architecture, 2024). Project: “Rousseau’s Emile: Approaches to Learning” (Paper & Poster Presentation). Funding: Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Research Award ($1000), spring 2021. Recipient of Kirmser Undergraduate Research Award, Freshman Category, K-State Libraries ($1000). You can learn more on our departmental research site, Initials.
  • Matthew Murphy (Modern Languages & Architecture, BA 2024) & Kylee O'Dell (Architecture & Art Minor). Project: “Space, Place and Function on the Camino of Santiago de Compostela”. Funding: Murphy, Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Research Award ($1000), summer/fall 2022, Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry (OURCI) Research Award ($200). O’Dell, Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry (OURCI) Research Award ($300).
